Francesco Amorosino
I was born in 1984 in Basilicata, in Southern Italy, and I live in Rome, where I work as a photographer, visual artist and educator. I teach in the Bachelor and in the Master in Photography of Accademia Italiana private fine art and design Academy. I manage my research space il FotoStudio where I organize exhibitions and courses.
In 2016 I won the Sony World Photography Award in Still Life category with the work Migrant Tomatoes in which I talk about illegal recruitment in the fields in Southern Italy through photographing the fingerprints on the tomatoes themselves. In 2024 with my series Turf Houses I was shortlisted at Sony World Photography Awards in Architecture and Design category. In 2024 I’ve published my first essay for the italian publishing house emuse: Photography in the age of hypercontrol.
In my works I am interested in investigating people's perception of reality through themes such as mystery, the supernatural, but also conspiracies and mechanisms of power. I work both digitally using still life photography in a metaphorical and sculptural way, and analogically using various alternative and experimental techniques.
Among my latest projects there is In Media Res in which I printed some photographs on fragments of marble in the darkroom, creating photo-sculptures. These works have been exhibited at Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Candela Books + Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, which has acquired one into its collection. With this project I won the Ecco Echo Award in 2020 and the CFS Adams Award in 2023.
Among the latest solo exhibitions there are The Forest and the Stars at the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade in 2021 and “Fantastic Voyage” at the Grenze-Arsenali Fotografici festival in Verona in 2022, Open House Festival in Rome in 2023 and Cosmo Photo Festival in Colleferro in 2024. In 2025 I was invited for an art residency at RadLab studio in Gabrovo, Bulgaria.
Lately I have been experimenting with artificial intelligence creating works mixing digital and analogue photography and AI.
I also work with videoart and AudioVisual Live Performance thanks to the collaboration with composer Stefano G. Falcone.
